Upon being convicted of defamation what is the deal?

If someone is "convicted" of defamation either by slander (spoken statements), or libel (for written, broadcast, or otherwise published words) and is sued for damages in a civil court or convicted by a criminal court, will the defamation charges appear on their criminal record in the future?
